The David Diet - Target Weight
CALCULATIONS
Set a goal, which may be a two stage goal. First, you may wish to get down under the definition of "overweight," and then target your Minimum Safe Weight (MSW). A more graphic definition of MSW than the "pinch an inch" one mentioned earlier is to sit on a wood chair and look down and verify all rolls of fat have disappeared.
There's been a lot of talk about the Body Mass Index(BMI). The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta says those who are at a level of 25 or above are overweight, and those who are at 30 or above are obese and those who are at 40 or above are considered extremely obese.
I have provided some specific samples below which you can follow with an ordinary calculator. But if have web access, you can punch in your height in feet & inches and your weight in pounds (or select the metric calculator further down the web page) and arrive at an instant BMI result. The link is right here. You can leave the height the same and keep trying different weight scenarios to see where you would fit into the scheme of things. Very nifty. Keep in mind the calculator is for those 21 and older. [There is a separate calculation required for those under 21 and it is gender specific.]
Here is one sample adult calculation done manually:
- Current weight in pounds: 175
- Divide weight by height in inches (60 inches) = 2.91666
- Divide result again by height in inches = .0486111
- Multiply by 703 = 34.173603
Conclusion: the above female is moderately obese
Let's say the same person has an initial goal of 125 pounds:
- Target Below Overweight in pounds: 125
- Divide weight by height in inches (60 inches) = 2.08333
- Divide result again by height in inches = .0347222
- Multiply by 703 = 24.409706
Conclusion: the above person is now just below the overweight level of 25
Let's say the same person weighed 100 pounds at 18 years old and wishes to return to that weight:
- Target for "Slim" in pounds: 100
- Divide weight by height in inches (60 inches) = 1.66666
- Divide result again by height in inches = .0277777
- Multiply by 703 = 19.527723
Conclusion: the above female is now slim, trim and ready for action!
So, what is the BMI for Minimum Safe Weight? In my case, it was 18.5, which was the lowest level still in the CDC's "normal" category. Check with your physician for a medical opinion in your particular situation.
MONITORING SUCCESS
If you are 175 pounds and want to drop to 125 pounds, write it down in a weight loss datebook. Weigh yourself daily on an ordinary digital scale (available at Wal-Mart!) while naked, after you return from your long walk but before your shower. Do not use an analog scale since it is tempting to cheat. The digital scale will put out one large number which you cannot ignore or shade one way or the other. Enter the result each day in your datebook. If you didn't lose anything you will try harder. If you did lose a pound, it will make you feel good about yourself. In some cases, the weight will stay the same or even rise a bit and then plunge all at once after your first or second major colon "cleanout." Use a tape measure weekly to see if you are losing inches from your bustline, waist and hips and also make a notation of these results. Take a webcam or digital camera photograph of yourself in bra and panties from the front and side weekly and send it to your buddy. Save a copy so you can look backwards in time to see how your shape improved, in the tradition of time lapse photography. On the David Diet, you can go as low as you desire. If your goal is from 175 pounds to an eventual 100 pounds (if you are 60 inches tall), that is not out of the question. But be aware of your Minimum Safe Weight (MSW) based on your build as well as the 18.5 level on the Body Mass Index, and do not go below it. Again, check with your doctor for a realistic level. I am currently thirteen pounds higher than my MSW (with a BMI of 20.5) so that I have a safety margin in case of illness. This diet is not about anorexia. It is about being height and weight proportional--and healthy.
